9 questions for local gadfly and abduction recording artist gerald hawk
by Cactus

1. it seems like you have moved, over the course of your records, from a sort of harrowing and eccentric singer-songwriter to more of a sound collage artist. am I off-base on that?

I have been recording soundtracks and sound collage long before any singer-songwriting material

The follow up to The Honey Guide Bird will be all sound collage

2. I understand you are also working in long-form video--can you tell me a bit about the easter island project you are working on?

I am working on two film projects--an experimental documentary on Easter Island which has been shot and needs to be edited and a feature length independent film which I will begin shooting in February

The film will deal with people's fear of change and the unknown

I am also working on a book entitled, "There is a God...but of course I don't believe in Him"

3. you seem to only do sporadic live shows--do you enjoy playing live sets? do you prefer making recordings to performing live?

The shows I have most enjoyed playing were in the woods, or in somebody's living room or basement

But at this point I would prefer to make recordings

4. how did you come to think that you wanted to make records?

I always wondered how all the men and women with their music had managed to crawl into the radio with their instruments

5. which of your records do you like best and why?

There are trees on both sides and some more lantern lights and swans floating...

6. do you feel an affinity with/for the bustling bay area noise scene?

My two favorite bands "Cyclops Maxi-Pad" and "Stinky Nightgown" were treated poorly by the scene

So I keep my distance

But I also heard that you have to sleep with Grux to feel an affinity with the bustling Bay Area noise scene

7. how does your extensive work in visual arts relate to your music? is it essentially the same as making music for you, or is it totally separate and different in mental approach?

It's all about being able to come up with an idea then deciding how to present it

8. you are well-known to be a voracious record-collector--what are some of your favorite recent musical acquisitions and/or fascinations?

Jacob Kirkegaard: Eldfjall
Spoon: Gimme Fiction
Bob Dylan: No Direction Home Tibetan Buddhish Rites: From the Monasteries of Bhutan
Porest: Mood Noose
BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa: Viking Brenniuin
Konono no.1: Congotronics
Morricone: Crime and Dissonance

9. I understand that you really love sports. what sports do you especially enjoy, and what about sports aesthetically appeals to you?

Basketball is my first love

The Pistons are a machine

But lately women's tennis with Hingis returning and Clijters on the rise
