1. So how do you go about making Face songs? Does the sound and music come
first? Lyrics first? How does a song come into being, typically?
Most Face songs were written out in the woods or up in the red rocks. I hike
up there during lunch with the dog and play and sing. Later I add
electronics. Also a standup bass player.
2. Does it much matter to you how others may react to your music, or do you
make the songs for your own amusement/purposes?
Of course both. Only a saliva weirdo would wish to be spit on. Letting
people hear is sharing. Sharing is very similar to keeping a plant alive.
Sharing waters the friends. Playing music in general is self soothing.
3. When you are playing a song, do you feel like you are inside of the
(world created by the mood or the narrative of that) song?
Yes I am inside the world.
4. Do you enjoy playing live shows more than recording, or vice versa?
Playing live serves a purpose. My social life is dominated by playing music
with people. Playing live shows attracts like minded musicians for more
music social life. Field recording is the best.
5. When you are sleeping, do you ever have dreams about your music/playing
music?
Yes, I dreamed about a great drum beat yesterday. Tonight I am going to try
to play it.
6. Do you feel a part of a particular music "scene" with Face? Does it
matter at all?
Not part of a music scene. I feel part of the hot summer day on the porch in
a rocker scene, when grandma fiddles. I spend a lot of time with my family.
One of my sisters is a bird watcher. Recently she got a cd of bird calls so
we listened to that a lot and tried to mimic the birds. I had a hard time
staying awake during the bird listening sessions because the narrator's
voice sounded a lot much like my relaxation hypnosis cds. Today I saw a
horrible sight. I saw a seagull pecking at a pigeon. Suddenly the seagull
sucked up the pigeon's guts like a noodle. I did not wish to be part of that
scene at all and afterwards I couldn't finish my burrito. So all in all, it
does matter which scene one is part of.
7. After you have recorded and released your music, do you listen to it at
home for enjoyment, or are you largely through with it at that point?
Still like to play the songs but don't listen to the recordings very often.
8. Does it concern you that people often seem to confuse the narrator in a
song with the person who wrote and is playing the song? Are your songs
generally reflective of you, or mostly just
the protagonist in the song (assuming there is a protagonist. haha.)?
I don't want to answer that.
9. Have you ever fantasized about murdering the audience while you were
playing?
That is a trick question.
10. Which mosses and/or lichens are you most fond of and why?
I like the jelly lichen. The algae is dominant so it looks like a miniature
blob, you motorize that thing and watch out, it's coming to get your toe.
Also I like the powdery soralia. It looks like sugar mountains. Pruinose
Lichen is beautiful and has crystals of calcium oxalate covering it's
surface. If I could shrink down, it would be like walking on snow with grey
round crystals flats growing like mushrooms everywhere. Cladonia
Cristatella remind me of lungs with no bodies. Imagine if the earth was
homogenous and the only living creature were these lungs sprouting from the
rocks. Lichens are able to colonize environments that have extremes of
weather. It's been said that animals easily adapted to extremes will do well
if there is a drastic weather change. So if our planet heats up or freezes,
the lichens might last and evolve into a truly symbiotic master race that
feeds from sun and air.
Face is playing September 24 with Eric Landmark, Galen, Pam, and Jimbo Trout
at the Hemlock Tavern. XK also plays with 0th on September 7, with Truman's
Water, The Vienna Noise Choir, Greg Ashley of Gris Gris, and DJ Malcolm at
the Li-Po Lounge.
